Why a Frenchie needs a breed-specific dress

Most dog dresses are cut for a narrow chest and a long back. A French Bulldog is the opposite: broad through the chest and shoulders, short in the back, thick-necked. Put a generic dress on a Frenchie and it either strains across the chest or hangs loose at the waist, and the skirt ends up in the wrong place. The dresses here are cut for that proportion, so the bodice sits flat and the skirt falls where it should.

Getting the size right

Breed alone won't tell you the size. Frenchies vary widely, and two dogs the same age can sit two sizes apart. Take three measurements before ordering:

• Chest girth at the widest point, just behind the front legs. This is the limiting measurement on a Frenchie and decides the size.
• Back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.
• Neck circumference where a collar would normally sit.

If your dog falls between sizes, go up. A dress that pulls across the chest restricts the shoulders and most dogs will try to get out of it.

Care

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, turned inside out to protect the print. Tumble dry low or lay flat. Skip the fabric softener, which coats the fibres and dulls printed graphics over time.

Will a ruffle dress bother my dog?
Most dogs stop noticing within a few wearings. Put it on right before something good happens, a walk or dinner, and it becomes routine quickly. Don't leave a first-timer in it unsupervised.

Are these warm enough for winter?
